Our story

Trust and Obey

By: Pinnacle Message

A small boy stands at the edge of a swimming pool, his father in the water with open arms urging him to jump. The child hesitates, glancing down at the water, but he hears his father’s reassuring voice: “Trust me, I will catch you.” Summoning courage, the boy finally leaps and lands safely in his father’s embrace. In that moment, the child discovers that his father is trustworthy, and by acting on that trust he experiences the joy that comes with obedience.

In the same way, our relationship with God often brings us to the edge of our comfort zone. We sense God calling us to trust Him and take a step of faith, even when we don’t see the whole picture. The Bible sums up this way of life in a simple phrase: trust and obey. Let’s explore what it means to “trust and obey” and why it’s so powerful in our Christian walk.

Trust in the Lord

One of the clearest instructions about trust comes from the book of Proverbs: “Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths.”biblehub.combiblehub.com This well-loved proverb (Proverbs 3:5–6) calls us to depend fully on God rather than on our own wisdom. Trusting God with all our heart means believing His promises and character even when life doesn’t make sense. Instead of trying to control outcomes, we choose to surrender our plans to Him. When we acknowledge God in all our ways, we can be confident that “He will make [our] paths straight”biblehub.com – in other words, He will guide us and work things out for good.

Stepping Out in Faith

A powerful example of trust and obedience is found in the life of Abraham. In Genesis 12, God asked Abram (later renamed Abraham) to leave behind everything familiar. The Lord said, “Go from your country, your people and your father’s household to the land I will show you.”biblehub.com Imagine hearing that command with no details or roadmap! Yet Abraham chose to trust God’s promise and obey His call.

Scripture records, “So Abram went, as the Lord had told him, and Lot went with him.”biblehub.com Abraham stepped out in faith without knowing the destination, and because he trusted and obeyed, God fulfilled His promise to make Abraham the father of a great nation. Abraham’s example reminds us that faith often means moving forward one step at a time and trusting God with the details.

Love and Obedience

Obeying God isn’t just about duty; it’s about love. Jesus said, “If you love Me, keep My commandments” (John 14:15)biblehub.com. In other words, our love for Christ is shown by our willingness to follow His instructions. Think of a child who obeys a parent not out of fear, but because they trust their parent and know that they are loved. Similarly, we obey Jesus not to earn His love, but because we love Him and trust that His ways are best for us. This kind of obedience is a joyful response to God’s love – it deepens our relationship with Him and keeps us in tune with His will.

Trust and Obey in Daily Life

Trust and obey” is not just a slogan for Bible heroes – it’s meant for our daily lives. Here are a few everyday scenarios where we can practice trusting and obeying God:

  • Facing uncertainty: When you don’t know what the future holds — for example, when making a big decision about school or work — remember to “trust in the Lord with all your heart” (Proverbs 3:5) and surrender your plans to Him. Instead of worrying, pray and believe that God will guide you. Hold onto His promise that He will direct your pathsbiblehub.combiblehub.com.

  • Resisting temptation: When you feel pressure to sin or compromise (to lie, cheat, or follow the crowd), choose to obey God’s Word even if it’s hard. By choosing honesty, purity, or integrity, you are saying, “God, I trust You enough to do what You say,” and God honors that faith.

  • Following God’s nudges: When God prompts you to take action — maybe reaching out to someone, offering forgiveness, or pursuing a calling that scares you — it might feel risky or uncomfortable. But if you sense His leading, take that step of obedience; you may be amazed at how God works through your “yes.”

Embracing Trust and Obedience

The old hymn “Trust and Obey” says, “for there’s no other way to be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey.” Those simple words carry a profound truth. When we trust God fully and walk in obedience, we experience a deeper joy and peace in Christ. Life won’t always be easy or predictable, but God’s faithfulness never changes – He will always catch us when we leap in faith.

Where might God be asking you to trust Him more? Is there a step of obedience you’ve been hesitant to take? Remember that every time you trust and obey, you are exercising faith. And as you do, you’ll find God proving Himself faithful again and again. There truly is “no other way” to live a fulfilling Christian life than to trust and obey.
