Born in Darkness, Drawn to Light

By Pinnacle Message

Narration
We enter the world from the quiet darkness of the womb. Encased, unseen, and shielded, we develop without light—yet our eyes are formed for it. This paradox whispers a divine truth: even though we are born into a world where spiritual darkness surrounds us, we were never meant to remain there. God, who is Light (1 John 1:5), calls us forth, not just to see light—but to become light.

From the beginning, humanity has stumbled in the shadows. "The people walking in darkness have seen a great light" (Isaiah 9:2), the prophet declared, foretelling the coming of Christ. Darkness may be our starting place, but it is not our destiny.

Exposition

1. The Condition of Darkness

We are all born with a sinful nature, separated from God's glory. “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). This darkness is not just around us—it is within us. Ignorance, fear, rebellion, and spiritual blindness cloud our path.

Just as a newborn does not know the difference between day and night, humanity in its natural state cannot distinguish truth from deception. But the Lord, rich in mercy, does not leave us there.

2. The Light That Calls Us

Jesus declared, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life” (John 8:12). His presence shatters spiritual ignorance. His Word becomes the lamp to our feet and the light to our path (Psalm 119:105).
Even those who lived far from the truth, like the Gentiles of Jesus' time, were invited into the radiance of salvation.
“The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world” (John 1:9).

Interpretation

God designed us with the capacity to respond to light—even if we were conceived in darkness. This is the mystery of grace: though surrounded by brokenness, our hearts are capable of being stirred by divine revelation.

When Saul of Tarsus walked in the full darkness of legalism and religious pride, a light brighter than the sun confronted him (Acts 9:3). That encounter redefined him—he became Paul, a carrier of the gospel light to nations.

Environmental influences, whether spiritual poverty or worldly pressure, often deepen our blindness. But just as pollution cannot extinguish the sun, the influences of our environment cannot permanently block the divine call.
The soul recognizes its Maker.
“For God, who said, ‘Let light shine out of darkness,’ made his light shine in our hearts…” (2 Corinthians 4:6).

The Role of Environmental Influences

Our upbringing, culture, trauma, education, and social conditioning shape our inner environment. Some are raised in households where Christ is unknown. Others are born into violence, abandonment, or confusion. These external forces can deepen spiritual shadows.

But God is not limited by our surroundings.
Moses was raised in Pharaoh's palace but drawn to the suffering of his people.
Esther grew up as an orphan in exile but rose as a queen to save a nation.
Even in the worst environments, God plants a longing for light—a holy dissatisfaction with darkness.

We often don't know why we weep when we hear the gospel, or why truth burns in our spirit—but it is the call of Light pulling on our soul.

Conclusion: Embrace the Light

We were born in darkness, but not to remain there. The very design of our soul inclines toward light, like seeds that stretch toward the sun through the soil.

Let us rise from the shadows.
Let us open our hearts to the One who said, “Let there be light.”
Let us declare with boldness: “The Lord is my light and my salvation—whom shall I fear?” (Psalm 27:1)

The world may try to keep you in the dark. But you were made to shine.
