Prayers Against Spiritual Blindness - Vol 1
By Pinnacle Message
“Open my eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of Your law.” – Psalm 119:18 (KJV)
Introduction:
Spiritual blindness is not a condition of the eyes, but of the heart and soul. It is when a person, though physically seeing, cannot perceive the truth of God. Just as physical blindness hinders natural vision, spiritual blindness blocks the light of God’s Word from illuminating one’s path. This condition is perilous because it prevents men and women from recognizing sin, understanding righteousness, and receiving salvation. In this blog, we’ll explore what spiritual blindness is, what causes it, and how believers can pray against it.
1. What Is Spiritual Blindness?
Spiritual blindness is a state of insensitivity or inability to perceive God's truth. It can affect individuals, families, churches, or even nations. Jesus encountered it often in His ministry — especially among the Pharisees.
“Having eyes, see ye not? and having ears, hear ye not? and do ye not remember?”
— Mark 8:18 (KJV)
In this verse, Jesus rebuked His disciples for their spiritual dullness. Though they had witnessed miracles, their understanding remained veiled. Like many today, they saw but didn’t comprehend. Spiritual blindness is seeing the external world while missing eternal truths.
2. Causes of Spiritual Blindness
A. The God of this World Blinds
“In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ... should shine unto them.”
— 2 Corinthians 4:4 (KJV)
Satan actively blinds unbelievers. He masks the light of the gospel so that many live in deception, bondage, and sin, unaware of their need for Christ.
B. Hardened Hearts
“For this people's heart is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes they have closed...”
— Matthew 13:15 (KJV)
A hard heart is resistant to correction, truth, and conviction. Pride, bitterness, rebellion, and unforgiveness all harden the heart, closing the eyes of the spirit.
C. Willful Rejection of Truth
“Because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved.”
— 2 Thessalonians 2:10 (KJV)
When people reject God’s truth repeatedly, they fall deeper into deception. Spiritual blindness can become a judgment — a spiritual darkness that grows thicker with each refusal.
3. The Cry for Sight
Even the strongest believers must pray for divine sight. David cried out:
“Open thou mine eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of thy law.”
— Psalm 119:18 (KJV)
David recognized that without God's help, even Scripture could remain a mystery. We must ask God to open the eyes of our understanding to discern truth from error.
4. The Healing of Blindness
Jesus healed both physical and spiritual blindness — a sign of His messianic purpose.
“Then touched he their eyes, saying, According to your faith be it unto you. And their eyes were opened...”
— Matthew 9:29–30 (KJV)
This miracle points to the power of prayer and faith. When we ask God in faith to restore our spiritual sight, He responds with revelation, clarity, and discernment.
5. Enlightenment Through the Holy Spirit
“The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling...”
— Ephesians 1:18 (KJV)
Paul prayed that the believers’ inner eyes would be opened to grasp their calling and inheritance. The Holy Spirit is our teacher and revealer. Without Him, the Bible is just a book — with Him, it becomes life.
6. Turning from Darkness to Light
“To open their eyes, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God...”
— Acts 26:18 (KJV)
This was Paul’s God-given mission — to turn the spiritually blind into seeing saints. The gospel is light, and Jesus is the Light of the world. When we pray and preach, we wage war against spiritual blindness.
7. A Prayer Against Spiritual Blindness
Let us end with this prayer:
“Lord Jesus, I ask You to open the eyes of my heart. Let me not be deceived by the god of this world, nor hardened in my own pride. Shine the light of Your Word into my soul. Remove every veil that covers my understanding. Where I have willfully rejected truth, forgive me. Enlighten me by Your Spirit, and keep me walking in the light. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
Conclusion:
Spiritual blindness is subtle but deadly. It keeps people from knowing God, walking in truth, and fulfilling their destiny. But the good news is that through Christ, the veil can be lifted. Let us seek His face in prayer, study His Word with an open heart, and ask the Holy Spirit to grant us divine sight. As believers, we must also intercede for others still in darkness — that they may see the light of Christ and live.
“But blessed are your eyes, for they see: and your ears, for they hear.”
