Prayers Against Spiritual Blindness

Vol. 4 — The Eyes of Understanding
“The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling...”
— Ephesians 1:18 (KJV)
Introduction:
There is a sight that surpasses natural vision — the seeing of the soul. Paul calls it “the eyes of your understanding.” These are the inner faculties of spiritual discernment that enable believers to grasp truth, purpose, and the presence of God. In this volume, we uncover the role of the Holy Spirit in awakening our inner vision, and how prayer opens up our understanding so that we may walk worthy of our divine calling.
1. The Call to Spiritual Enlightenment
Paul prayed for the believers in Ephesus not just to gain knowledge but revelation.
“That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ… may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him.”
— Ephesians 1:17 (KJV)
Spiritual blindness is not cured by information but by revelation. Head knowledge cannot replace heart enlightenment. The Holy Spirit reveals what study alone cannot unveil.
2. Understanding the Hope of His Calling
When our spiritual eyes are opened, we see God’s purpose for our lives clearly.
“That ye may know what is the hope of his calling…”
— Ephesians 1:18a (KJV)
Many believers struggle with direction and identity because their inner eyes are clouded. But when God enlightens our understanding, confusion disappears, and we walk in clarity and destiny.
3. The Glorious Inheritance of the Saints
“And what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints.”
— Ephesians 1:18b (KJV)
Spiritual sight allows us to perceive the value God places on us. We begin to walk with purpose, dignity, and spiritual authority, not as beggars but as sons and daughters of the King.
4. The Eyes of the Blind Shall Be Opened
This prophetic word from Isaiah finds fulfillment in Christ.
“Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, and the ears of the deaf shall be unstopped.”
— Isaiah 35:5 (KJV)
This isn’t just about physical healing but about the spiritual awakening Jesus brought. Prayer invokes this ancient promise — that blindness must bow at the name of Jesus.
5. The Unveiling Through the Word
The Scriptures are God's mirror and light — but only when our eyes are open.
“Open thou mine eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of thy law.”
— Psalm 119:18 (KJV)
David’s prayer should be ours daily. When we open the Bible, we must also open our hearts. The pages hold wonders — but veils must be removed to behold them.
6. Christ, the Light of the World
“I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.”
— John 8:12 (KJV)
To follow Jesus is to walk in divine light. His presence gives us the ability to see beyond the natural — to discern, interpret, and apply truth wisely.
7. A Prayer for Enlightenment
“Father, I come before You asking for the eyes of my understanding to be enlightened. Remove every veil, every cloud, every distraction that darkens my spiritual sight. Let me see Your calling, grasp Your promises, and discern Your presence. Enlighten my soul through Your Spirit. May Your Word be a lamp to me, and Christ be the Light within me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
Conclusion:
We must walk not only by faith but with open eyes of understanding. These eyes are not physical but spiritual — granted by the Holy Spirit, sharpened by prayer, and aligned by the Word of God. Let us press into this enlightenment daily, that we may not be deceived, distracted, or defeated.
“Arise, shine; for thy light is come, and the glory of the Lord is risen upon thee.”
— Isaiah 60:1 (KJV)
