Title: Be Strong and Courageous — The Call of Joshua and Our Own Divine Mandate

By Pinnacle Message Ministries

After the death of Moses, the great servant of God, the mantle of leadership fell upon Joshua. The opening verses of Joshua 1:1–11 capture one of the most profound transitions in Scripture — a shift not only of leadership but of spiritual destiny. God’s voice breaks the silence of mourning to call Joshua forward: “Moses my servant is dead; now therefore arise, go over this Jordan, thou, and all this people, unto the land which I do give to them.”

Narration: The Moment of Divine Transition

Joshua stood before a river of impossibility — the Jordan — and before a people who had wandered forty years in the wilderness. The weight of leadership was immense, yet the command was simple: “Arise and go.” God’s promise was not distant or uncertain; it was grounded in His faithfulness. Every place the sole of Joshua’s foot would tread upon, God had already given. What appeared to be a challenge was, in truth, an inheritance waiting to be claimed.

Exposition: The Power of God’s Assurance

In verses 5 to 9, God gives Joshua words that every believer should etch upon the heart: “As I was with Moses, so I will be with thee: I will not fail thee, nor forsake thee.” These words are more than comfort — they are a covenant of companionship. God’s presence is not seasonal; it is steadfast. The command to “be strong and of a good courage” is repeated three times, emphasizing that courage is not the absence of fear but the triumph of faith over fear.

Joshua was told to meditate on the Book of the Law day and night, for spiritual victory begins in the mind before it manifests in the land. The more we immerse ourselves in God’s Word, the more courage we inherit from His Spirit.

Interpretation: Our Modern Call to Courage

Every believer has a “Jordan” — a place of transition between promise and fulfillment. God’s call to Joshua mirrors His call to us: to rise from comfort, confront our fears, and walk in the authority of His Word. When God said, “Have I not commanded thee?”, He was reminding Joshua — and us — that obedience is the foundation of courage.

In our own calling, God still whispers: “Be strong and courageous.” Whether you lead a family, a ministry, or a dream yet unfulfilled, your success is not defined by human strength but by divine alignment. God has already gone ahead, prepared the land, and sealed the promise.

Conclusion: The Promise Still Stands

Joshua’s journey teaches us that the death of one season births the dawn of another. When God says “Arise,” it means destiny awaits. The Lord who guided Moses and empowered Joshua still calls you today — to believe, to act, and to conquer the land set before you.

“For the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” — Joshua 1:9
