“Prophesy, Son of Man” — The Valley of Dry Bones Explained
Book of Ezekiel 37:1–10
NARRATION — What Is Happening in This Chapter?
The prophet Ezekiel is carried by the Spirit into a valley filled with dry bones—not recently dead, but long lifeless, scattered, and hopeless. God asks a piercing question:
“Son of man, can these bones live?” (Ezekiel 37:3)
Ezekiel does not answer with logic or emotion. He answers with faith and surrender:
“O Lord God, You alone know.”
God then commands Ezekiel to prophesy—to speak life where death reigns. As Ezekiel obeys, bones rattle, assemble, receive sinews and flesh, and finally the breath (Spirit) of God enters them. What was a graveyard becomes a mighty army.
This is not metaphorical poetry—it is prophetic instruction.
EXPOSITION — What Does This Mean Spiritually?
The dry bones represent:
-
Spiritually exhausted people
-
Nations in moral collapse
-
Believers stuck in silence, fear, or despair
-
Situations declared “beyond repair”
God reveals three spiritual laws here:
1. Life responds to God’s Word
The bones did not move because of time—but because of spoken obedience.
“So is My word that goes out from My mouth; it will not return to Me empty.” — Isaiah 55:11
2. Prophetic speech activates spiritual power
God didn’t revive the bones Himself—He commanded Ezekiel to speak.
“Death and life are in the power of the tongue.” — Proverbs 18:21
3. The Spirit completes what words begin
Structure came first—but breath (Spirit) brought life.
“It is the Spirit who gives life.” — John 6:63
INTERPRETATION — What Is God Teaching Believers Today?
This chapter teaches believers how to harness spiritual strength:
How Believers Can Walk in This Power
-
Speak Scripture, not fear
-
Pray boldly even when nothing looks alive
-
Declare God’s promises out loud
-
Invite the Holy Spirit, not just solutions
Prayer is not symbolic—it is effective warfare.
“The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.” — James 5:16
When believers pray in alignment with God’s Word, heaven moves first—earth follows.
Seven Bible Verses That Mirror Ezekiel 37
-
Romans 4:17 – God calls things that are not as though they were
-
Isaiah 55:11 – God’s word never returns void
-
John 6:63 – The Spirit gives life
-
Proverbs 18:21 – Life and death are in the tongue
-
Joel 2:28 – God pours out His Spirit on all flesh
-
James 5:16 – Prayer is powerful and effective
-
2 Corinthians 4:13 – We believe, therefore we speak
Together, these verses form a resurrection theology.
Final Encouragement
Ezekiel 37 teaches this truth plainly:
God is still asking believers to speak—
not because the bones are strong,
but because His Word is alive.
