The Burning Bush — When God Calls Your Name
Throughout the Bible, God often met ordinary people in ordinary places to accomplish extraordinary purposes. Shepherds, fishermen, farmers, and prophets discovered that the Lord delights in using humble people to reveal His glory. One of the most remarkable encounters took place in the wilderness of Sinai, where a simple shepherd named Moses experienced a moment that would forever change the course of history. It was there, before a bush that burned without being consumed, that God called His servant and revealed His holy purpose.
The account is found in Exodus 3:1–15. Moses had spent forty years tending the flock of his father-in-law, Jethro. Once a prince in Egypt, he had become a shepherd in the wilderness. Humanly speaking, his greatest years seemed to be behind him. Yet God often prepares His servants in hidden places before calling them into public ministry.
As Moses led the sheep to the far side of the wilderness, he noticed something unusual. A bush was on fire, yet it was not consumed. Curious, he turned aside to see this great sight.
Then the voice of the Lord called from the midst of the bush:
"Moses, Moses."
Moses answered,
"Here am I."
The Lord immediately instructed him,
"Draw not nigh hither: put off thy shoes from off thy feet, for the place whereon thou standest is holy ground." (Exodus 3:5)
This was more than an unusual miracle. It was a divine invitation into God's presence. The holiness of God transformed ordinary ground into sacred ground.
God then revealed Himself as the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. He declared that He had seen the suffering of His people in Egypt, heard their cries, and had come down to deliver them. Then came the life-changing commission:
"Come now therefore, and I will send thee unto Pharaoh."
Moses immediately questioned his ability. He asked, "Who am I?" He worried about what others would think and confessed his weakness. Like many believers today, Moses focused on his limitations rather than God's power.
But God never answered Moses by praising his abilities.
Instead, He gave one simple promise:
"Certainly I will be with thee." (Exodus 3:12)
The success of God's mission would never depend upon Moses' strength. It would depend upon God's presence.
Then God revealed His covenant name:
"I AM THAT I AM." (Exodus 3:14)
This majestic declaration reminds us that God is eternal, self-existent, unchanging, and completely sufficient. He is not defined by circumstances or limited by time. He simply is.
The burning bush also points us to Jesus Christ. Just as the bush burned without being destroyed, Christ entered our broken world without surrendering His divine nature. He came as the visible revelation of God, calling people into a relationship with the Father. Through Him, we are invited to stand upon holy ground—not because of our own righteousness, but because of His grace.
Perhaps today God is calling you.
His call may not come through a burning bush, but it often comes through His Word, His Spirit, and the quiet prompting placed within your heart. Like Moses, you may feel unqualified or overwhelmed. You may believe someone else is better suited for the task.
Yet throughout Scripture, God has consistently chosen ordinary people who were willing to trust Him. His calling is never based upon human perfection but upon His divine purpose.
The burning bush reminds us that God still speaks. He still calls. He still equips. And wherever His presence leads, His power provides.
The greatest question is not whether God is calling.
The question is whether we are willing to answer,
"Here am I."

Heavenly Father, thank You for calling ordinary people into Your extraordinary purposes. Help us to recognize Your voice and respond with willing hearts. Remove every fear, every doubt, and every excuse that keeps us from following Your call. Teach us to trust not in our own strength but in Your abiding presence. May our lives reflect Your holiness, and may we faithfully serve wherever You lead. In the mighty name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
