Sunday Encounter #11
When God Closes a Door — Trusting the Path You Cannot Yet See
Scripture: Isaiah 55:8–9; Proverbs 3:5–6; Acts 16:6–10; Revelation 3:7
There are moments in life when a door closes so unexpectedly that we are left confused. A prayer seems unanswered. An opportunity disappears. A relationship ends. A dream we held close no longer seems possible.
Our first reaction is often disappointment.
We ask questions that echo through our hearts:
"Lord, why did this happen?"
"Why did You allow this door to close?"
"Have I done something wrong?"
These questions are understandable, but they often arise because we can only see the present moment, while God sees the entire journey.
Imagine a traveler approaching a familiar road only to find a gate firmly shut. The traveler stands there frustrated, believing the journey has ended. Unknown to him, just beyond that closed gate lies danger. Meanwhile, another road—one he never noticed—leads safely to the destination prepared for him.
This is often how God works.
In Acts 16, the Apostle Paul intended to preach in certain regions of Asia. His plans were good. His motives were pure. Yet the Holy Spirit prevented him from going there. Paul could have interpreted the closed door as failure. Instead, he remained attentive to God.
Soon afterward, during the night, Paul received a vision of a man from Macedonia pleading, "Come over and help us."
The closed door was not rejection.
It was redirection.
God had something greater waiting beyond the path Paul originally intended to take.
This reveals an important truth: God's guidance is not always seen in the doors He opens, but also in the doors He lovingly closes.
Isaiah reminds us:
"For My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways My ways," declares the Lord.
God's perspective reaches beyond our present circumstances. While we see one chapter, He sees the entire story.
Many of us pray for open doors, but we rarely thank God for the doors He closes.
Yet some of God's greatest blessings come disguised as disappointments.
A missed opportunity may protect you from unnecessary pain.
A delayed answer may prepare you for greater responsibility.
A closed relationship may preserve your future.
An unexpected change may position you exactly where God intends to use you.
This is why Proverbs 3:5–6 encourages us:
"Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths."
Notice that Scripture does not say we will always understand.
It says we are called to trust.
Faith grows strongest when understanding is incomplete.
Trust is not believing that everything makes sense.
Trust is believing that God remains faithful even when life does not.
Jesus Himself experienced what appeared to be closed doors. Many rejected His message. Crowds abandoned Him. The cross looked like defeat.
Yet what appeared to be the end became the doorway through which salvation entered the world.
God often closes temporary doors to open eternal ones.
Perhaps today you are standing before a door that refuses to open.
Instead of asking only, "Why did God close it?"
Ask another question:
"Lord, where are You leading me instead?"
That question changes everything.
Because our confidence is not found in an opportunity.
It is found in the One who guides every step.
Remember the promise found in Revelation 3:7:
"What He opens no one can shut, and what He shuts no one can open."
When God closes a door, you do not have to force it open.
Walk with Him.
Trust His wisdom.
Follow His leading.
The path may not yet be visible.
But the One leading you has never lost His way.
Reflection
Is there a closed door in your life that has left you discouraged?
Bring it before God today. Ask Him not merely to reopen it, but to reveal the path He has prepared for you. His direction is always motivated by His love, and His plans are always greater than our own.
Prayer
Heavenly Father,
When I face closed doors, help me to trust Your wisdom above my own understanding. Give me peace when I cannot see the next step, and teach me to follow wherever You lead. Remove fear, strengthen my faith, and remind me that Your plans are always good.
Thank You for protecting me from paths that are not meant for me and for opening the doors that align with Your perfect purpose.
In the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
