When Jesus Meets You Behind Closed Doors
His Presence Reaches the Places Fear Has Locked
Scripture Anchor: John 20:19–29
The disciples had locked the doors. Jesus had risen, but they were still afraid. They had heard the news of the empty tomb, yet they did not know what would happen to them next (John 20:19). Fear had made their world small.
Then Jesus stood among them and said, “Peace be unto you.” He showed them His hands and His side. The wounds were real, and so was the resurrection. As they looked at Him, their fear gave way to joy (John 20:20).
Perhaps you know what it feels like to live behind a closed door. You may still go to work, speak to people, and carry out your responsibilities, while keeping your deepest questions hidden. What if the loss happens again? What if the answer never comes? What if I cannot find my way forward?
Jesus did not wait for the disciples to become brave before He came to them. He met them in the room where they were afraid.
Thomas was absent that evening. When the others told him they had seen the Lord, he struggled to believe. Eight days later, the disciples were together again, Thomas among them, and the doors were shut. Jesus came and spoke peace once more. Then He invited Thomas to examine the wounds for himself (John 20:24–27).
Jesus knew exactly where Thomas’s doubt lived. Thomas answered, “My Lord and my God” (John 20:28). His question did not have the final word; his encounter with the risen Christ did.
If you are struggling to believe today, bring your honest heart to Jesus. Tell Him where you are afraid. Tell Him what you hoped would happen and what has left you uncertain. The Lord who welcomed Thomas’s question invites you to seek Him too. As the father in Mark 9:24 prayed, “Lord, I believe; help thou mine unbelief.”
The closed room was not the end of the disciples’ story. Jesus spoke peace over them and then sent them out (John 20:21). In time, the people who had hidden in fear would proclaim that He was alive. His presence gave them a reason to step forward.
Whatever door fear has closed in your life, begin with this truth: the risen Jesus sees you. You can ask Him for courage for the next faithful step. Scripture tells us to bring our requests to God in prayer, and that His peace will guard our hearts and minds in Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:6–7). Let that be your prayer today.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, You came to Your disciples when they were afraid, and You welcomed Thomas when he struggled to believe. Meet me in the places I have kept closed. Hear my questions, steady my heart, and help me trust that You are alive and present. Give me courage to take the next step You have placed before me. Amen.
