SUNDAY ENCOUNTER — SERIES TWO
Sunday Encounter #21
When Jesus Draws Near on the Road of Disappointment
Recognizing His Presence When Hope Feels Far Away
Scripture Anchor — Luke 24:15 (KJV)
“And it came to pass, that, while they communed together and reasoned, Jesus himself drew near, and went with them.”
Two disciples were walking toward Emmaus with heavy hearts. Behind them lay Jerusalem, the crucifixion, and the painful collapse of their expectations. They had believed Jesus would redeem Israel. Now, although reports of His resurrection had reached them, they struggled to understand what had happened.
Their words revealed their sorrow: “But we trusted that it had been he…” (Luke 24:21).
Perhaps you recognize that unfinished sentence.
“I had hoped the relationship would recover.”
“I had hoped the opportunity would open.”
“I had hoped that by now, things would be different.”
Disappointment can make the road ahead feel longer than it is. Yet the Emmaus account reveals a tender truth: Jesus drew near while the disciples were still struggling to understand.
He Meets You in the Conversation
Jesus approached them and asked what they were discussing. He gave them room to speak about their grief and confusion.
You can bring that same honesty into prayer. Faith does not require you to hide sorrow behind religious language. Psalm 62:8 invites us to pour out our hearts before God because He is our refuge.
Tell Him what hurts. Tell Him what you cannot explain. Your unanswered questions do not place you beyond His care.
He Opens the Scriptures
The disciples understood the events through the lens of their disappointment. Jesus helped them understand those events through Scripture.
Beginning with Moses and the prophets, He explained what the Scriptures said concerning Himself (Luke 24:27). His suffering had not defeated God’s purpose; it belonged to the work of redemption.
This does not mean every painful circumstance will become clear immediately. It means we need God’s Word to guide us when our feelings cannot give us the whole picture.
Psalm 119:105 describes His Word as a lamp for our feet and a light for our path. A lamp may illuminate only the next few steps, but that light is enough to help us walk faithfully.
His Presence Rekindles the Heart
Later, as Jesus broke bread with them, their eyes were opened, and they recognized Him. Looking back, they asked, “Did not our heart burn within us…?” (Luke 24:32).
The road had begun in sorrow, but their encounter with the risen Christ changed its direction. They returned to Jerusalem with news to share.
Jesus had been walking beside them before they recognized Him.
Today, your hope may feel faint. Still, Hebrews 13:5 reminds believers of God’s promise never to leave or forsake them. Bring your disappointment to Him, open the Scriptures, and ask Him to help you recognize His presence.
Closing Prayer
Lord Jesus, draw near to every heart carrying disappointment. Help us speak honestly before You and listen carefully to Your Word. Where our understanding is limited, strengthen our trust. Rekindle our hope and give us courage to take the next faithful step. Amen.
Your next step: Read Luke 24:13–35 this week. Bring one disappointed hope to Jesus in prayer, and ask Him to guide your response.
