SUNDAY ENCOUNTER — SERIES TWO

Sunday Encounter #22

When You Return to Give God Thanks

Remembering the Giver Behind the Gift

Scripture Anchor — Luke 17:15–16 (KJV)

“And one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, and with a loud voice glorified God, And fell down on his face at his feet, giving him thanks: and he was a Samaritan.”

Ten men stood at a distance, carrying a suffering that had separated them from ordinary life. When Jesus entered their village, they lifted their voices together: “Jesus, Master, have mercy on us” (Luke 17:13). Their cry reached the One whose compassion could cross the distance others kept.

Jesus told them to show themselves to the priests. As they went, they were cleansed. Healing met them along the road of obedience. Imagine their amazement: bodies restored, the possibility of returning home, and a future suddenly opened before them.

Yet one man changed direction.

When he saw that he was healed, he returned to Jesus, glorifying God. Before moving into his restored life, he bowed at the feet of the One who had restored him. His gratitude became worship.

The Blessing That Brings You Back

It is easy to pray earnestly when a need presses heavily upon us. We remember God in hospital corridors, sleepless nights, financial uncertainty, and seasons of painful waiting. But when relief arrives, our attention can quickly move toward everything we can now do.

Jesus asked, “Were there not ten cleansed? but where are the nine?” (Luke 17:17). His question invites us to examine our own hearts. Have we paused to acknowledge His mercy? Have we thanked Him for the strength that carried us through yesterday?

Psalm 103:2 urges us to bless the Lord and remember His benefits. Gratitude keeps memory alive. It helps us recognize that our story contains gifts we did not create and mercies we could never earn.

Thanksgiving in an Unfinished Season

Perhaps you are still waiting for an answer. Your circumstances may not yet resemble the healed man’s joyful return. Scripture still invites you to give thanks in everything (1 Thessalonians 5:18).

This does not require pretending that suffering is pleasant. You can lament honestly while thanking God for His presence, His promises, and the people who help you endure. James 1:17 reminds us that every good gift comes from above. Even during a difficult week, grace may arrive through a meal, a timely conversation, or strength for one more necessary step.

Philippians 4:6 teaches us to bring our requests to God with thanksgiving. We can ask for what we need while remembering what He has already given.

Your Encounter This Week

The Samaritan returned with his whole heart. Let his example interrupt your hurry today.

Read Luke 17:11–19 slowly. Write down three specific mercies you have received. Thank God for each one, then express appreciation to someone whose kindness has helped you.

Let the blessing lead you back to the feet of Jesus.

Closing Prayer

Lord Jesus, forgive me for receiving Your gifts and rushing past the moment of gratitude. Teach me to remember Your mercy, acknowledge Your provision, and worship You with a thankful heart. While I wait for answers, help me recognize the grace You give today. Let my gratitude become generosity, and let my life honour You. In Your name, Amen.
