When Jesus Walks Beside Your Disappointment
Recognizing His presence on the road you never expected to travel
Scripture Anchor — Luke 24:15 (KJV)
“And it came to pass, that, while they communed together and reasoned, Jesus himself drew near, and went with them.”
The Road of Unanswered Questions
There are journeys you begin with excitement, and others you take because something has broken your heart.
In Luke 24, two disciples were walking toward Emmaus after the crucifixion of Jesus. Their conversation carried the weight of everything they could not understand. They had hoped He would redeem Israel. Now they were trying to make sense of His death and the reports of an empty tomb.
Perhaps you recognize that feeling.
You prayed with expectation. You trusted God with a relationship, an opportunity, or a need. Yet the outcome left you wondering how to move forward.
The disciples expressed their disappointment in three words: “But we trusted…” (Luke 24:21).
Those words can hold an entire season of grief.
But while they were speaking about what had happened, Jesus drew near and walked with them. They did not recognize Him immediately, yet His presence was already real.
Your inability to recognize God’s presence does not mean He has abandoned you.
Jesus Makes Room for Honest Hearts
Jesus asked the disciples what they were discussing. He gave them space to speak about their sorrow, confusion, and disappointed expectations.
You can bring that same honesty to Him.
Prayer does not require you to hide your grief behind familiar religious words. You can tell the Lord where you are hurting. You can admit that you do not understand. You can ask Him to help you trust again.
The disciples did not have a complete understanding of the resurrection before Jesus joined them. He met them on the road and began teaching them there.
Come to Him as you are today. Let your prayer begin with the truth about your heart.
Let His Word Help You Understand
As they walked, Jesus explained what the Scriptures said concerning Himself. He showed them that His suffering belonged within God’s redemptive purpose.
Their circumstances needed more than discussion; their understanding needed the light of Scripture.
Disappointment can narrow our vision until pain becomes the only thing we see. God’s Word helps us remember His character when our feelings are unsettled.
This does not mean every painful event will become easy to explain. Some questions may remain unanswered for a long time. But Scripture gives us a firm place to stand: Christ has risen, His love is faithful, and those who belong to Him have a living hope.
Before you decide that your story has reached its end, spend time with the One who sees beyond the chapter you are reading.
Invite Him to Stay
As they approached the village, the disciples urged Jesus, “Abide with us” (Luke 24:29).
Later, at the table, their eyes were opened and they recognized Him. Looking back, they remembered how their hearts had burned within them as He opened the Scriptures.
Their encounter changed their direction. They returned to Jerusalem to share the news.
Today, make room to be with Jesus. Open your Bible. Speak honestly in prayer. Give Him your attention.
You may still be walking through disappointment, but you can take your next step knowing that your risen Saviour hears you and welcomes you into fellowship with Him.
A Moment of Reflection
What disappointment have you been carrying into your conversations, your prayers, and your expectations?
Read Luke 24:13–35 this week. Notice how Jesus listens, teaches, and makes Himself known. Then ask Him to help you receive His truth in the place where your hope has grown weary.
Prayer
Lord Jesus,
You know the hopes I have carried and the disappointments I struggle to explain. Thank You for meeting me with patience and love.
Help me bring my honest heart to You. Open the Scriptures to my understanding, and correct the conclusions I have formed through fear or sorrow.
Where I have become discouraged, renew my hope in Your resurrection. Give me strength to obey You even while some questions remain.
Abide with me, Lord. Teach me to recognize Your care, receive Your Word, and walk faithfully in Your presence.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
This week’s invitation: Set aside a few quiet minutes today to read, pray, and place one specific disappointment before Jesus. If you would like someone to pray with you, visit the Prayer Request page at www.pinnaclemessage.com.
The risen Jesus met His disciples on a sorrowful road. Bring Him the road you are walking today.
